My daughter-in-law threw my stuff out of the house after learning she inherited it, but karma got her the same day
Oh, never mind, Hattie. You never wanted me in this family. You looked down on me from the start, judging me simply because I didn’t grow up with a silver spoon. Well, now I’m finally getting what I deserve from you.”
Matt’s face went from puzzlement to anger, his fists clenched. “Everything my family said about you is true,” he said in a low, shaky voice. “You truly are a greedy witch.”
Jessica’s veneer cracked.
“And you’re a backboneless mama’s boy!” she exclaimed. “You always run to her defense, you always put her first.” She sneered, pointing a perfectly manicured finger at him. “That’s pathetic. You’re just as petty as she is.”
“Don’t you dare talk about my son like that!” My voice broke the silence, harsher than I intended.
“I’ll do what I want, Hattie.” Jessica put her hands on her hips, looking satisfied. “And there’s nothing either of you can do about it.”
“Actually,” Jessica continued. “Hurry up and put your things away on MY lawn before I call the police and they arrest you both.”

“Are you out of your mind?” Matt yelled.
I watched, dazed, as Matt confronted Jessica. It made no sense! Dad didn’t even like Jessica! My hands were shaking as I pulled out my phone and quickly called Dad’s lawyer.
Her voice was soothing, reassuring. “Hattie? I was just about to call you.”
“…really thought I liked you?” Jessica yelled in the background. “You were just a means, a way for me to get out of my old neighborhood. Now that I have the house, I don’t need you anymore!”
“Please,” I whispered to the lawyer. “Tell me she’s lying. Dad never left his house to Jessica.”
There was a pause, then a hearty laugh.
“You’re right. Your father didn’t leave her the house. It was a test to make her reveal her true colors.”
“A… test?” Relief washed over me, and I started laughing, tears welling up in my eyes. It was the kind of laughter that came from deep within me, a laugh that surprised even me.
Jessica’s face contorted, her confidence wavering. “What are you laughing at?”
“Oh, Jessica,” I managed, still trembling. “You really should have waited until the reading of the will.”
“What?”
I let satisfaction wash over me as I explained, “Dad never left you. It was a simulation, a test to reveal your true nature.”
Matt turned to Jessica, his face overcome with emotion. “Looks like Grandpa’s plan worked.”
Jessica’s eyes widened. Her gaze flickered between Matt and me as she realized what she’d done. Her confidence crumbled, her voice becoming desperate as she struggled to save face.
“Matt, please, baby.” She reached out, but he pulled back, the finality in his gaze unmistakable.
“I swear, I never meant it!” she begged. “I was just… upset, frustrated. You know I love you!”
He shook his head. “Forget it. You want a divorce? You got it.”
As Jessica stomped off the property, her heels sinking in with each step, I felt a strange peace wash over me. Dad’s wisdom lingered, a silent, protective presence.
Matt and I gathered the remains of my life from the grass, and I couldn’t help but think that sometimes the true legacy isn’t found in a house, but in the lessons about who truly deserves to be a part of your life.
Dad would have been proud.
