Properties of flax seeds, the functional food par excellence

Flaxseeds have some contraindications and are obviously not suitable for everyone. They should be avoided if you are taking blood thinners, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or cholesterol-lowering medications. They are also not recommended if you have hormone-sensitive breast or uterine cancer, are pregnant or breastfeeding, and, of course, if you have allergies.

It’s also important to avoid raw and immature flaxseeds, as they may contain toxic compounds. Remember to always consume them ground and with plenty of water to prevent digestive problems. Furthermore, it’s recommended to only purchase small bottles of flaxseed oil, preferably in dark glass, and store them in the refrigerator, as the oil can spoil quickly.
